Computational Fluid Dynamic Modelling
Effective Visualisation & Understanding of Water Storage

Trident CFD modelling
In addition to our capabilities around traditional water network modelling, utilising software such as InfoWorks WS PRO, Synergi Water, InfoWorks ICM, & EAPNET, we also are able to carry out Computational Fluid Dynamic Modelling (CFD), using the Ansys software and tools. CFD modelling provides a further in depth analysis and understanding on water movement through pipes and fittings, as well as water storage vessels.
What is CFD Modelling
CFD modelling is a specialised and visually-driven technique used in the water industry to demonstrate how water flows through fittings, pipes, and storage tanks such as service reservoirs. It can depict the water's trajectory in and around an as asset such as a reservoir, while identifying varying velocities and potential recirculation that may lead to increased water age.
At Trident, we provide CFD modelling to:
-
Analyse water interactions within your reservoirs through steady-state or transient simulations in fully 3D models.
-
Offer insights and commentary on problematic areas (such as low velocities, recirculation, and high water age).
-
Explore solutions for enhancing water movement and turnover in your reservoir.
-
Deliver comprehensive reports with animated results.
This modelling technique is applied across various different industries where understanding the interaction of designs with their environment is crucial, such as in the automotive design industry, including Formula One racing as depicted.

Our focus
Our CFD modelling team is led by our Principal Hydraulic Modeller, within the CFD team. With extensive experience in CFD modelling specifically for the UK water sector using Ansys CFX/Fluent, Trident International is equipped to deliver the expertise required for:
-
Constructing comprehensive 3D reservoir models, incorporating existing features like pillars, sumps, and pipes.
-
Mesh creation.
-
Setting up models for both steady state and transients.
-
Calibrating models against telemetry flows and levels.
-
Verifying models with chlorine tracer data.
-
Solving and post-processing results.
Exploring options for reservoir operation enhancements, including:
-
Adjustments to inlet pipe orientation.
-
Configurations for baffle curtains.
-
Implementation of perforated pipes.
Beyond service reservoirs, Trident International also specialises in:
-
Analysing velocities and substance transport within impounding raw water reservoirs, including simulating a reservoir mixer to minimise stratification and disperse suspended organic matter.
-
Simulating the collapse of an above-ground conical reservoir with a focus on the surrounding area's inundation.
